Chinese Album Packaging

Last week one of my friends brought in some Chinese CD albums for me to have a look at. The albums were all pop compilations which isn't my sort of music, but the way they are packaged is very interesting and quite unique especially for that genre, which is normally very basic in terms of design over here.

3 of the CD's all seem to be part of the same series as we have  "Love 05" "Love 07" and "Love 10" which is obviously a continuous series. "Love TV" may also be part of it too but I don't know. The CD in the bottom left corner is also a compilation but is not part of the same series.

"Love 05" is 2 CD's in a case which slides out of the red-ish sleeve. The sleeve doesn't cover the entire package which leaves a small bit of the white case showing providing a nice contrast. There is also a fold out booklet, with one side providing the track list and credits and the other side providing a nice glossy pattern similar to what is on the sleeve. There is no photographs of any of the artists, just this nice pattern.

"Love 07" is shaped more like a book than a CD case. Instead of being plastic it is made from felt, making it nice to touch. The text is silver and glossy which helps make the case look even more elegant. Aside from the outside of the case, there isn't much more (I think the booklet was elsewhere) but the case just opens and looks similar to "Love 05"'s inside.

The basic CD holders.

The back of the case with the really fancy text, border and flower pattern.

"Love 10" has a honeycomb style collection of the featured artists which goes around the logo and also looks a bit like a heart shape (which would make sense as it is about love). At first glance it looks as though this is on a multicoloured shiny background, but it is actually printed on a see through sleeve which lifts off the multi coloured case. The inside of the case is the same as the other "Love" CD's and it comes with a booklet which uses various pastel shades and a faint honey comb pattern to decorate it, as well as the song lyrics or track information (sorry I can't read chinese lol).

The sleeve and the outside of the case.

The inside of the case and the booklet.

"Love TV" has a pink sleeve wrapped around the case. The sleeve has holes punched out so that a heart shape appears from the gold cover behind it. For some reason there are a few gold dots printed on the sleeve as well, which is either a printing error, or just to be different. Either way it doesn't change the impact of the two together, it just looks a bit random when the sleeve is on it's own. The booklet is half gold and half white with black and gold text (a very minimal approach to the text). And the inside of the case and the CD are bright pink which provides a nice contrast and helps it stand out to it's target audience of girls.

And finally the other CD, I can't remember exactly what it is called but it was something along the lines of "Album of Men"or something like that. At first glance it looks like the worlds largest boy band, but I was assured that it was a compilation CD and these were the artists contributing to the CD. The packaging for the album combines the booklet and the CD case as it is a hole punched booklet with compartments for each CD as pages as well. This is quite a cool design and could easily work for any album, it gives it more of a personal touch, as if you were looking through a photo album or a yearbook (not that we make a big fuss of those here in the U.K). The cover itself is quite glossy and makes the cover stand out even more.

Due to the huge population in Hong Kong, a law was created so that boy bands would have double the amount of members so that there would not be too many boy bands. (Only joking :P) The first page is a fold out of the guys and then the CD is enclosed as part of the next page.

The booklet also contains pictures of empty rooms which looks quite cool, there is also a DVD enclosed similarly to the CD.
