Music Video Analysis (1980's)

I'm up to the point in my dissertation where I am talking about the beginning of MTV and the music video.
MTV first aired in 1981 and the first video played was "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles

Michael Jackson was responsible for changing the music video (only one year after MTV's arrival!) with the video's for "Billie Jean" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwDkoJKPr4g&ob=av2e
"Beat It" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3jCPtxOkGo&ob=av2n
and "Thriller" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_MuUcxHATo (which is 13 minutes long including the credits!) MJ's previous album "Off The Wall" was not as successful as he wanted it to be, and he believed this was due to him being black, which is why he apparently fought very hard with MTV to get these heavily produced videos aired. The videos proved so popular that eventually MTV had "Thriller" played twice an hour, this also encouraged them to play more videos from black artists and making MTV a channel with no barriers.

In 1984 MTV aired it's first Rap Video -"Rock Box" by Run-D.M.C. The video shows the group playing in an underground club and also overlays animations. As well as the three members of the group they also have a band playing on stage. The song is very rock influenced despite being a rap song and crosses over very similar to "Beat It" which gave a rock twist to a pop song with it's powerful riff and guitar solo.

I also want to talk about Run-D.M.C and Aerosmith "Walk This Way" as that really shows rock music and rap music working together to top the pop charts in 1986.

I'm also planning to talk about the early Beastie Boys and Public Enemy videos in my essay. Beastie Boys were the first white rap group in a genre dominated and created by black people, they also used rock samples and guitars in a lot of the songs on their first album "Licensed to Ill" similar to a lot of the early Run-D.M.C songs.
"Fight For Your Right" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBShN8qT4lk
"No Sleep Till Brooklyn" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07Y0cy-nvAg&feature=fvst

I chose Public Enemy as they are influenced by Run-D.M.C but are more political and caused up-roar with some of their songs and videos (while still being aired on MTV at the time?)
"Louder than A Bomb" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8EyAKh-XWQ
"Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZM5_6js19eM&feature=channel

Going back to Rock music -I was also going to look at Iron Maiden's videos as I remember them making use of the album artwork in the form of a cartoon added to footage of them playing, but I don't think this became a trend until much later in their career, so I'll look into that.
